Happy Birthday Tashi!

The very fact that over the past twenty-five years Tashi books have sold well over a million copies is testament to the love that so many have for this very special boy. While magic and fun abound the Tashi stories also have a lot for children to absorb and learn about life and now even the very youngest readers can be introduced to the joy with these special new My First Tashi books. How simply beautiful that even though the hugely talented Kim Gamble is no longer with us his legacy lives on through his equally talented daughters and of course the magical boy who is everyone’s favourite.

I do love the counting book but this one has to be my first pick because really who doesn’t want to see the colours of dragons, genies, tigers and Baba Yagas as well as pigs, horses and buses?! 🙂

I particularly love that the large block letters of each colour word reflect the patterns or features of the illustrated object so the GREEN for a dragon has spotty scales, the WHITE for the tiger is striped and BROWN for the horse has tufts of hair! So fun!!

When one of the best loved characters from Australian children’s books is turned into a highly acclaimed and hugely popular TV series, you can expect the fun to just keep on coming!

And it does as a new series of Tashi books, based on the animated show (Flying Bark Productions) , hits the shelves.

Jack and Tashi are determined to win the Annual Fishing Competition but the Warlord has other (and more devious) ways of making sure that he ends up with the golden trophy.

Unfortunately, he doesn’t hold onto it for long and when it goes missing, Jack and Tashi need to solve the mystery. Along the way they manage to acquire a baby kraken and it can only be a matter of time before that infant’s mother comes looking for it.

Miss Small thoroughly enjoyed this story – just as much as she does the originals and the TV show and is looking forward to more.

As a delightful bonus, after the story there are several pages of engaging activities such as wordsearches, crosswords, quizzes, mazes and more created by the talented Meredith Costain.

There was great excitement today when the mail arrived with two more in the series. I know what will be on the reading agenda tonight!

I have discovered over the past twenty years, most of those as a teacher-librarian, that everyone loves this heroic and clever little figure, who comes from far away. Tashi’s adventures have entranced readers, both boys and girls, from his very first appearance and this latest instalment will prove every bit as enchanting.

Tashi’s gift as a storyteller is only rivalled by that of his creators and this lovely hardbacked collection of five stories would make a wonderful gift – but will also be a hot favourite in any primary school library. I have seen the toughest and most advanced readers excitedly scoop up new Tashi books with a nonchalant disclaimer ‘I loved these when I was younger Miss’ – then take them home and devour them!

In this collection Tashi and his friends deal with a nefarious wandering magician (though there is some doubt as to whether saving the greedy Baron’s treasures is a worthy cause), have a narrow escape in a dangerous house fire, thoroughly rout some thieving rare orchid snatchers and finally, as told on the fun camping trip with his ‘adopted’ family, Jack & Co, a story that demonstrates Tashi’s resourcefulness and courage in the face of a rather wily dragon.

The Tashi books, including this one, offer children and teachers to explore themes of friendship, bravery, loyalty, ethical problem solving, teamwork and more. There is a richness in the stories that can springboard into many follow on activities including exploring other cultures and countries.
