Neil the Amazing Sea Cucumber – Amelia McInerney & Lucinda Gifford

Standard

Affirm Press

April 2023

RRP: $19.99
ISBN: 9781922848635

These days The Kid and I have beach days that look like her surfing and me sitting, enjoying the view or reading but in the past, from the time she was toddling, exploring the beaches at low tide was one of our favourite pastimes. We especially loved the hermit crabs of all sizes, the wiggly worms, the shiny sea jellies, the (thankfully) rare sighting of a blue-ringed octopus (!!!!!!!) and of course, the occasional glimpse of a sea cucumber.

I think Neil might make a good point. These are, seemingly, not the most interesting of creatures. [However, there are around 80-100 species MANY OF THEM EDIBLE -with their outer layer, bêche-de-mer, considered a real delicacy in many cuisines.] I don’t think that’s a consideration that should be raised with Neil, the hero of this adventure.

I say adventure because, for a sea cucumber, it is indeed that. Neil’s true love, Sandra (hehe) has been swept away – not off her feet, because obviously she has none – but more like a ‘go with the flow’ moment and carried away on a tidal surge. In a case of mistaken identity Neil sees, away in the distance, a Sandra look-alike (which is actually a discarded party pickle) and in his own cu-cumbersome way he races to her rescue.

The accompanying illustrations of this epic journey across the seabed had me in fits of the giggles. With deadpan delivery worthy of Neil Pye (The Young Ones – for whom I do hope this Neil was named) this boring amazing (if slimy) critter will endear himself to young readers from Prep upwards.

In my experience, young kiddos are really good at subtlety, and making inferences from illustrations that expand on text, and any adult reading this aloud will have difficulty in restraining themselves from snort laughs (or is that just me?). I love a good pun and there are some here that will provide a perfect introduction to this form of word play for youngsters. Lucinda’s clever cartoon style artwork is the ideal accompaniment to this narrative – which might seem sparsely written but is actually teeming with vibrant expression. And full marks to the designer for the absolutely superb binding – the gold foiling and Neil’s texture on the front cover is just a brilliant finishing touch!

Highly recommended for kids (and big kids) who love some understated humour and hilarious illustrations.

Moon Sailors – Naomi Woodward. Illustrated by Rachel Gregg

Ford St Publishing

October 2022

ISBN: 9781922696182

RRP: $16.95

If you are exploring the depths of the ocean or the limitless skies or if you simply are looking for a beautiful lyrical book to share with our kiddos, this would be a wonderful choice. It offers so much for even very young readers with elegant poetical prose, enchanting descriptive language and a richness of imagination that will provide much scope for exciting conversation.

As well as this gorgeous linguistic aspect there are the creatures to be discovered and researched – many of them not so well-known: chitons, periwinkles, and jelly moons along with such wondrous aquatic marvels as Neptune’s necklace or iridescent algae. I can already picture a beautiful wall of art going up in the classroom or library to reflect this

But the two children on their journey of imagination are not just relishing the ocean, they are sailing across the night sky, past the constellations and heading towards Earthrise. The illustrations are every bit as captivating as the text with the subtle shades of ocean greens and blues and the night skies’ indigos, blues and pinks. Each spread is a feast for the eyes and you and your readers will delight in close examination of them picking out delicate details.

I have yet to share this one with a class, but hoping I get to visit my little school just over my back fence this coming week or so, with its strong focus on the ocean, being right on the waterfront as it is. I know the children there will just love it as much as I do.

There are some activities free to download but you will be able to conjure up so many follow-up activities to this one as it just lends itself to so many learning experiences whether English, science, STEAM or Environmental studies.

Highly recommended for little readers from Prep upwards.

How We Came to Be: Surprising Sea Creatures – Sami Bayley

Standard

Hachette

September 2022

Imprint: Lothian Children’s Books

ISBN 9780734421364

RRP $19.99

A delightful 1/2 class, at a local school which has a special focus on all things ‘ocean’, as it is located right on the very seafront, and I thoroughly enjoyed exploring the depths of the brine with Sami.

Dive on in and find out about each of the underwater zones and the weird, wonderful creatures who inhabit them, as well as how those creatures have adapted and evolved over time to suit their habitat.

We enjoyed so much rich discussion as we took our time over each double spread. Along the way we interrupted our reading to measure out just how long a giant oarfish is, and to see if we could flatten ourselves like flounders (which was a nice opportunity to talk about alliteration!) and to talk about what the children (and the school) are doing to help preserve the ocean on our doorstep.

The marvellous creatures are shown with great detail and each one is accompanied by neat facts, which add even more to the wealth of information being shared. It is, of course, quite difficult for little humans as young as these to grasp the concept of millions of years or indeed, thousands of metres down below the water’s surface but they can realise the scope and enormity of this part of our natural world.

This is another of Sami’s lavishly visual offerings with her trademark superior illustrations and I, for one, just love her self-representation right down to her distinctive hair and winged eyeliner!

Having stolen just half an hour or so to pore over this and seen the fascination exhibited by my audience, I would love the opportunity to incorporate this into a more extended learning experience.

HIghly recommended for readers from as young as 5 or 6 years old, and naturally, particularly useful if you are exploring a unit of inquiry focused on the Ocean.

Walker Books Australia

ISBN: 9781406388800
Imprint: Walker
Australian RRP: $12.99
New Zealand RRP: $14.99

I’ve had the joy of some truly lovely board books recently and this one is another that will prove a favourite with any tiny human with whom you share it.

While very simple in its text the vibrant illustrations accompanied by the ‘peep through’ interaction will delight any little reader as they begin to explore the wonderful underwater world with colourful fish including a little clown fish just like Nemo and a gorgeous aquamarine dolphin.

This is one of the Baby Walker range which is specifically designed to engage the tiniest of little ones from an early age and inspire their love of books and reading as they grow.

It would make a beautiful gift for a newborn or any little person up to around 3 years old particularly, not to mention a super addition for any early learning centre.

Highly recommended for 0 – 3 years old.

Penguin Random House

June 2020

  • ISBN: 9780241411797
  • Imprint: Ladybird
  • RRP: $14.99

This is another gorgeous board book which will delight your littlest readers as they discover all kinds of surprises under the flaps on each page – some of them with more than one!

Peppa is worried about her goldfish. Poor Goldie seems sad but how does one cheer up a goldfish? Peppa, being an intuitive little piglet, thinks perhaps Goldie is lonely so the Pig family go to visit the aquarium to get some advice on finding a friend for their little pet.

Luckily Miss Rabbit is there to show them around and tell them about some marvellous aquatic creatures and best of all, they find a special friend for Goldie.

It’s simple but with wonderfully colourful illustrations and those flap-surprises will enchant little readers from as young as babies upwards to around 4 years old.

I defy anyone to tell me that they are unfamiliar with Baby Shark! Aside from all the hyped up little kids singing it there have been plenty of big kids and even some adults (I’m looking at you Lily!).

What a phenomenon it has been so there’s no doubt that young readers will love this colourful, entertaining and informative book that explores the variety of sharks found in Australian waters – doo doo doo doo doo doo!

Each double spread features another of our sharks and includes: tasselled wobbegong, Port Jackson, shortfin mako, great white, hammerhead, pygmy and more with salient details about each.

You won’t need to coax your readers to engage with this one as a read-aloud. They will be singing along from the first page!

Whether you are buying this for your collection or perhaps as a great gift for a child you know overseas, it’s a great way to share some simple information in a really fun way.

Highly recommended for all Baby Shark fans from around 2 years upwards.
