Easter Goodies – hopping your way!

This is a swag of lovely titles for little people just in time for Easter gifts. When my girls were little – and then with my grandies – their Easter gift was always heavier on the book gifts than the chocolate. (Of course a little bit of chocolate is always necessary at any age!). So if you are of a similar bent these might suit your purpose from tiny ones to slightly bigger ones – enjoy!

First up from the Baby Animal Tales series:

These are such sweet and simple books perfect for some soothing reading sessions with little people. The illustrations are digitally manipulated combining photographic images of each little animal with glorious watercolour-like enhancements. The overall effect of this simply shouts sunny days and happiness.

Little Duckling ignores his mother’s instruction not to leave the nest while she goes off to find him a juicy worm and inevitably gets into a little pickle when his solo adventure on the water leads him to following first a darting dragonfly and then a friendly frog. Naturally this leads him well away from the nest and he gets a little anxious. Fortunately, he discovers he has paddled around in a complete circle and when he hears some quiet ‘peep peep’ sounds he realises his brothers and sisters have hatched and he is home safely

Little Bunny is very wary of leaving the safety of the burrow but her good friend Mouse is excellent at teaching important safety skills like using her twitchy whiskers and velvety ears and most of all her strong back legs. All of these come in very handy when she accidentally runs into a fox and despite her fright is able not only to escape but also to warn her bunny family in the burrow.

These are just truly delightful and would make a beautiful gift for any little reader from around toddler up to Prep age.

I’m Ready series – Jedda Robard

Penguin Random House Australia

March 2020

Imprint: Puffin

RRP: $1299

I’ve shared some from this series before so many of you will already know how adorable these are for little kiddos around 2- 4 years old. Each title deals with those significant events in childhood featuring Australian animal families in a sturdy board book format.

I’m Ready for the New Baby

9781760891626

ISBN: 9781760891626

Quite possibly the most significant life event for a little person – especially if they are the first-born little Wombat is excited about the forth-coming arrival of a new brother. Mother and Father Wombat are very on top of involving the little one in all the preparations including helping to decorate the nursery, handing over her old cot (because she’s way too big for it now!) and choosing a gift (and one for herself as well). All of this ensures a happy and calm time for everyone and the joy in welcoming new little baby brother wombat is evident.

I’m Ready for Easter

9781760891596

ISBN: 9781760891596

There is great excitement all round as little Platypus and his friends prepare for an Easter celebration. All the familiar rituals are here for the little readers to recognise – bakers with their hot cross buns, colourful treats appearing in the shops, making Easter hats for the parade, as well as making a basket to hold treats and of course the fun of an Easter Egg hunt and special lunch with family and friends. Given our current circumstances and most if not all little ones missing out on all this shared fun, this would be a fabulous read to share and perhaps plan ahead for the next Easter

Peter Rabbit 2 tie-ins

Penguin Random House

February 2020

Peter Rabbit Movie 2 Novelisation – Beatrix Potter

9780241415290

ISBN: 9780241415290

Imprint: Puffin

RRP: $12.99

The first Peter Rabbit was a runaway (hop away?) success and the sequel released this month has been hotly anticipated. Sadly children will not get to see it just yet with all the cinemas closed but the next best thing would surely be sharing the new adventures by reading the book. Then they will even more hyped up for when they eventually get to see the movie!

Based on the Beatrix Potter’s original stories of Peter but with a modern twist to contemporise for new audiences, these new adventures will be just as popular in this sequel.

Peter Rabbit 2: Bunny Trouble

9780241410875

ISBN: 9780241410875

Imprint: Puffin

$9.99

And not to be forgotten the emergent readers have this very cute easy reader to add to their reading repertoire. Peter’s new adventure in the big city is illustrated with photographic stills from the movie making a great connection between film and text. Level 2 in Penguin Young Readers for ‘progressing readers’ this one would be perfect for little ones from around Prep- Year 2 as the tackle more complex sentences, simple dialogue with picture and context clues.

Also look out for the Peter Rabbit Quiz Book, Peter Rabbit Sticker Activity book and the Peter Rabbit Colouring Sticker Activity book.

This Easter is not the one that any of us expected. The Kid and I were meant to be going on our first joint overseas adventure for a week in Phuket but instead we are going to be grateful to be safe at home and enjoy some sunshine, gardening, walking and reading. I hope all my readers will also be feeling as blessed in their homes and don’t forget to add a bit of chocolate to your reading!

a lift-the-flap book

February 2020

Peppa’s popularity shows no signs of diminishing any time soon and with the range of books for tiny readers that are emerging her little fans will continue to adore her small adventures.  With unicorns being so hot at the moment this is surely a winning combination!

Peppa wants to play with her much-loved magical unicorn but she can’t find it anywhere. But luckily Daddy Pig is always ready to help out and the pair begins a search all over the house. Little readers will love lifting the flaps to reveal what is hidden in each place they search until the final reveal – oh there’s magical unicorn!

As we’ve come to expect from the Peppa Pig collection the colours are vibrant and cheerful and the splash of glitter on the cover will undoubtedly add to the allure!

Christmas fun for littlies

Standard

As the weeks go rushing past and in no time it will be time to hang the stockings we all seem to go into a kind of frenzy of ‘what to get for..?’.

There are some very cute new books for little people which would make great stocking stuffers:

Peppa’s Christmas Jumper Day

9780241371589

Penguin

Imprint: Ladybird

November 2019

ISBN: 9780241371589

RRP: $9.99

Yep, we’ve all been there – when the kid says ‘I need this (outfit) for tomorrow.’ I’ve had to make rush Virgin Mary costumes and Captain Cook complete with tricorn so I feel the pain.

When Peppa announces that the next day is Christmas jumper day at playgroup there’s a scramble for the box in the attic to retrieve last year’s jumpers. The problem is that Peppa and George have grown through the year and their jumpers no longer fit them. George can wear Peppa’s but what will Peppa wear?

Luckily Daddy Pig is one inventive and creative papa and saves the day with flair…and glitter!

Tiny tots would love this colourful board book with its familiar characters and not only does it make it a great gift for your child but 10% of the RRP will be donated to Save the Children – win win! Highly recommended for babies to preschool age.

The Lonely Christmas Tree – Chris Naylor-Ballesteros

9781408892923

Bloomsbury

November 2019-11-16

Imprint: Bloomsbury Children’s Books

ISBN: 9781408892923

RRP: $16.99

What an exquisite little jewel of a book! Inspired by ‘Twas the Night Before Christmas children will love the story of the last lonely tree on the hillside who finds happiness at Christmas and finally is surrounded by love.

The illustrations are just truly beautiful and many children will recognise the ‘rhythm’ of this text if they have heard the original inspiration.

The underlying message about loneliness and the joy of being together with friends is very timely for the festive season and I believe that young readers will rejoice that the little tree is no longer alone.

Highly recommended for reader from around 5 years upwards.

I’m Ready for Christmas – Jedda Robaard

9781760891619

Penguin

Imprint: Puffin

ISBN: 9781760891619

October 2019

This is the introduction to a gorgeous new series of colourful board books especially for Australian children and celebrating the special events in a little person’s life.  I love the idea behind this series which is to bridge the gap between early concept books (ABC, numbers etc) and standard picture books. What is even more attractive is the truly Australian flavour throughout.

The days are getting warmer and longer.

Cicadas are buzzing in the trees.

Like all of us little Miss Wombat knows that this means that Christmas is close and the preparations including making 3 x great-grandmother’s pudding and wrapping gifts combine with reflection on all that has happened throughout the year.

Naturally the book concludes with a beautiful family feast.

Just delightful!

I’m Ready for Preschool – Jedda Robaard

9781760891602

Penguin

Imprint: Puffin

October 2019-11-16

RRP: $12.99

And following hard on the heels of Christmas hundreds of little ones will be getting ready for preschool/prep/kindy which is both exciting and a little anxiety-making at the same time.

I’m trying something new soon. Something new and exciting . . .

Little Koala is a little bit nervous about starting preschool but like so many others is having quite a bit of fun testing out his backpack, water bottle and hat. And once he’s taken that first big step into the room and starts playing with new friends all his worries disappear.

Once again so many littlies will readily identify with this simple but effective story and they will see themselves as they too prepare for their first big leap into the wider world.

Stay posted for the next two in the series, coming in March 2020 – Easter and New Baby.

The perfect double for a little pre-preschooler of your acquaintance or if your school has an early childhood centre attached – a great addition to the shelves.

Highly recommended for 2-5 year olds.

Since the first appearance of the ‘Crayons’ they have been very firm favourites with readers of all ages but of course, especially little people.

This delightful board book is a great introduction to these colourful personalities particularly for the tiniest of book-lovers.

Duncan has lost his crayons! The reader is invited to help find them and count all ten. Each page of course features its own colour with a typically quirky comment from the featured crayon – and naturally an illustration which highlights its character.

Little ones will love this and counting books are always so popular! This one does double duty helping toddlers and upwards learn both numbers and colours.

Highly recommended as a terrific addition to a Santa sack for a special little person in your life.

Four ELMER board books in one handy package!

Elmer’s Colours
Elmer’s Day
Elmer’s Friends
Elmer’s Weather

Shrinkwrapped in an attractive card wrapper to make a gorgeous gift for a young baby and an esssential addition to every playgroup and nursery school’s book shelves.

Fact: Everyone loves elephants.

Fact: Everyone loves Elmer.

Well, that’s how it works in our family and I have to say, that I have not shared Elmer with any Lower School humans who have not had a similar response!

And now, in the 25th anniversary year of Elmer stories, here is the dinkiest, cutest little series/set to gift to miniscule people in your circle.  As we know, reading starts with the smallest of children if it is to be a lifelong habit and this perfectly sweet collection of four Elmer board books is a super way to start your favourite little one off on such a journey.

Each little board book is sturdy, well designed – and particularly important, the exactly right size for small dimpled hands to clasp onto and wave around excitedly.

As one might expect, vibrant colours abound and are accompanied by simple text to which tinies will relate well. I cannot recommend these highly enough. As well as the joys of the stories and colourful illustrations, simple concepts are shared. For example, in Elmer’s Friends the reader is introduced to those friends with comments such as ‘Hello Snake. You’re longer than anybody’.

While these might not suit everyone’s school library – those with Early Childhood centres or who accommodate younger siblings might differ – they are certainly a gorgeous gift for the small people in your life.

Read about the evolution of Elmer here and the always wonderful Sparklebox has heaps of resources here.

And now, sit back and enjoy an Elmer experience here.
